The Maitre D. in the (very modestly priced) restaurant is seriously the best comedy turn since the Marx brothers.

Exactly as advertised, an old slightly faded relic, comfortable and friendly.

    It's in Naples.

Keep your hand on your wallet.

We have stayed at the Cavour sevaral times. It's not the greatest but it is brilliantly located about 1 minute walk from the drop point by the airport Alibus and 5 minutes from the pick-up point as well as the main railway station. The food is always at least adequate and the value for money in today's Italy is excellent. Rooms on the upper floors are surprisingly quiet for the location in the main square, Piazza Garibaldi. If you don't need luxury but want a clean, adequate room with a decent breakfast in a first-class location for convenience then this is the one. We would unhesitatingly stay there again. The price we paid for half-board in June 2010 was 2/3 the cost for b&b in Rome.

Wireless internet is available but a little pricey at 2? an hour though compared to the low room cost this is a trifling consideration. The place is distinctly shabby but if you are out all day, who cares?

Easy access to the Metro and Circumvesuviana means tours of all sights in Naples, day trips to Pozzuoli, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento are all easy options. Essentially there are abundant opportunities to explore - ideal for people into history, architecture, art and archaeology. This hotel is perfectly located and much better for people with these interests than, say, Sorrento where you are stuck miles out on a peninsula - that is better suited to those who want to loll by pools and only make the occasional trip out.

Breakfast is good and plentiful. Rooms are basic and adequate. The double-glazing is good so there's little noise trouble.

The hot water supply to rooms on higher levels can be terrible. especially in the evening when it slows to an almost non-existent trickle. It was okay in the mornings though. Wireless internet is available but only for ?1 per 30 minutes. This is absurd when many hotels supply this as a standard free service.

Museums, churches, shopping, transport (Naples Station), easy access on to Herculaneum, Pompeii, Vesuvius and Sorrento

Our family room was spacious. The breakfast was good value for money.

Greeting at Reception was appalling - ignored then silent registration (in spite of our attempts to speak some Italian) We had requested a room near or next to other members of our family. The receptionist grunted that we were near each other - 3 floors apart! The hotel is in much need of refurbishment.

Close to train station and metro for easy access to other places. Not an area to stay around as a tourist.
