Travelled alone to attend a conference towards the end of September 2011. The Apollo is excellent value. I stayed in a twin-bedded room on the second floor which has recently been refurbished. (I understand from staff that all the rooms are in the process of being refurbished). My room was compact, but perfectly adequate - light, bright and modern. The well-lit, white and stainless steel bathroom was particularly impressive, given the way it had been configured in a relatively small space. The staff were all helpful, friendly and pleasant. The cleaning of the room was impeccable. I didn't take breakfast or eat in the hotel, so unable to comment on that aspect. No problem with noise even though my courtyard room on the second floor overlooked the entrance to the hotel. The Apollo is situated on the Hagley Road, on the western approach to the city, where lots of hotels are situated. Taxis (extremely plentiful and efficient) cost about £5-£6 to get to and from the conference centre in Broad Street, though being a major arterial route, there seemed to be lots of buses running along the Hagley Road.
The door entry card I used didn't work for summoning the lift, but staff were always around and helpful in using their pass card to get the lift. (The hotel is built, motel-style, with access to the rooms via external balconies). Annoyingly, wifi didn't work in the rooms, only in the public areas, and even then the reception staff had to reset the server for me on several occasions to get an internet connection. Staff were generally very willing and helpful, but when I came to check in on the Saturday afternoon there was only one member of reception staff on duty, and she was also doubling up as "barman" for the bar area adjoining reception, though she seemed to be coping very well, even when a tour party arrived, just after I had settled down with my gin and tonic.

Most of the staff were pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was excellent as was cleanliness
On our second night we were constantly disturbed by noise from other guests outside the reception area. Despite phoning down to reception the night staff were not interested in doing anything about it. Made useless comments and did not ask the people to be quiet or move them on. Have made a complaint but as yet have not received a response or apology

Free parking, good location and breakfast was okay.
Bed was awful, the worst I have ever slept in. It was like the ones you find in student houses but worse. The lights weren't all working in the room so the room was dark. Also the blankets on the bed were dirty, one was covered in hair. To top it all off we got woken up at 4am by a group of screaming girls, reception (which was just below our room) did nothing about it. Not a great experience.

Terrible hotel! dirty rooms, lights not working, dirty walls, unhelpfull staff add to that the place is basically a converted council estate style property. Plenty of proper hotels on the hagley road, my advise is to stay elsewhere.

Hotel very tired and undermaintained inside and out. Cracked bath and tiles. Tatty bedding. Not a very cosy environment

ONLY ONE COMPLAINT THE SHOWER TEMPERATURE CHANGED VERY QUICKLY ONE MINUTE COLD THEN VERY HOT.

The room was clean and well presented, all the necessities were there and the staff were helpful enough. Security to the building and room was good.
The actual building was very uninviting, stairwells and corridors looked very unactractive and the carpets were old, stained and mismatched.
